The Association for Independent Living (AFIL) was founded on the premise that all adults have the right to experience life on their own, to the fullest extent of their ability and is dedicated to enriching the lives of mentally challenged young adults.
AFIL is a non-sectarian, non-profit living environment, dedicated to educating mentally challenged young adults to be independent and live on their own. It provides a family living or 'training house' environment, enabling young adults to learn and practice basic living skills required for self-sufficiency.
Once they have mastered the basic skills required, the next step for the residents is to move into efficiency apartments while still under the guidance of staff, where they put into practice the skills they learned in the training house environment.
Beyond the apartments, and after exhibiting a suitable level of ability, there are several buildings with condominiums where a lower level of supervision is provided. This enables even more independence while the residents remain in the AFIL community.
